In the year 1968 it was felt by Dr. T. Barnabas to start/ initiate Management Development Programme in Ahmednagar College, as industrial growth in Ahmednagar had just begun and also the University of Pune had Instituted Diploma in Business Management- D.B.M. and Masters in Management Science -M.M.S. courses at the University level. The Ahmednagar College was the first college outside Pune and within the five districts under University of Pune to recognize / realize need for management development in rural area.
Realizing the need for training in the field of Computer due to growth of I.T. sector and also the need for managerial experts, Prof. J. Barnabas took decision of establishing a separate Management Institute. Accordingly, the Institute of Management Studies, Career Development & Research (IMSCDR) was established in the year 1990 with M.P.M. course & later on other Management courses i.e. D.B.M. & M.M.S. were transferred from Ahmednagar College to the Institute.
IMSCDR is a self-financed Christian Minority Institute. The Institute is affiliated to University of Pune and recognized by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. The Institute offers 6 University level Post Graduate Programmes in Management and Information Technology including Ph. D. The Institute also offers 9 Institute level Programmes to cater to the changing needs of the society. The Institute has reputation for need based and novel educational Programmes, interactive teaching methodology, strong industry interface, meticulous research, meaningful consultancy, community-oriented activities, state of art infrastructure, student development initiatives, visionary leadership, fair and transparent governance and innovative practices. The MBA Programme of the Institute is accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA), New Delhi. The Institute imparts leading knowledge, develops appropriate attitude, skills and competencies to meet corporate and organizational requirements. The Institute conducts various academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities to develop student's overall personality. The Institute also conducts various extension activities for students so as to make them responsible citizens.

The Institute encourages faculty members and students to participate in extension activities. The Institute undertakes various extension activities like environment protection, tree plantation, blood donation camps, educational exhibitions, IT camp, social upliftment, training, research, consultancy, career guidance seminars etc. which are jointly organized by faculty members and students.
Dr. S. B. Kolte, Director General of the Institute was actively involved in the activities of the sister concern 'Centre for Studies in Rural Development (CSRD)', Ahmednagar. This Centre played an instrumental role in revitalizing education by relating it to the needs of the rural people. He worked in more than 45 villages in the district of Ahmednagar motivating rural people for development work. He initiated lot of irrigation projects, worked to improve the education and the health standards of the rural folk. It may be mentioned that this Centre provided a model for what is presently known in India as the National Service Scheme.
The Director General of the Institute, Dr. S. B. Kolte, has encouraged a group of women from Shrirampur Tehsil in the Ahmednagar district to form 'Vasundhara Vruksh Savardhan Samiti'. This Samiti, which is an NGO, is working in the area of environment protection, has undertaken Tree Plantation at various places in Shrirampur. They have planted more than 5,000 trees.
The faculty and students visit various NGOs like Snehalaya, Bhau Saheb Firodia Vridhashram, Bosco-Gramin Vikas Kendra, Janki Bai Apte Deaf and Dumb School, Saavali, Observation Home etc. The objective of such visits is to sensitize the students towards social issues and social responsibilities. The students also undertake various activities for such NGOs.
The faculty and students visit various villages like 'Ralegaon Sidhi, Hiware Bazar, Pargaon, Vadgaon Amli etc. The objective of such visits is to sensitize the students towards rural issues and rural development. The faculty and students participates in various exhibitions for creating awareness regarding various opportunities in management education.
The faculty members conduct seminar on 'Career Guidance' in various educational Institutes and creates awareness about various opportunities in management education amongst students.
The Institute conducts IT camp for rural people to create awareness amongst them about computers.
The Institute has conducted IT training for senior citizens.
The Institute regularly organizes 'Blood Donation Camp' for students and staff in collaboration with Jankalyan Blood Bank.
The Institute provides training, research and consultancy services to the academic, industrial and Government organizations. The Institute also provides infrastructural facilities to them and provides them the resource persons if required.
The Institute celebrates 'International Women's Day' every year. The 'Vidyarthini Manch' of the Institute organizes a Programme named 'Samwad' on the occasion of it. The Programme gives opportunity to the women students to interact with the successful women from different walks of life.
